I suffered a detached retina before Christmas and due to circumstances (flying out to Canada for 10 days) and not realising what my symptoms meant it remained detached for nearly two weeks. I was referred as an emergency to Dr McGowan and was examined and operated on in a matter of hours. I have since developed a cataract, which tends to be expected after retina surgery, and Dr McGowan removed this. I cannot praise the treatment I received highly enough. Dr McGowan put me at ease and at every stage explained the procedures and what I could expect. He impressed me with his easy going manner and approachability. I have been told by my optician that I am extremely fortunate to have the quality of eyesight I have considering the length of time my retina was detached. I consider it not a matter of fortune, but the skill and attention that was given to me by Dr McGowan. After surgery I require no different prescription reading glasses than I did before this occurred. During my operation Dr McGowan calmly and professionally mentored a student who carried out my surgery. He had an excellent manner with the student, yet ensured throughout the procedure that she carried out the surgery exactly as he would have completed it, giving her guidance and advice when necessary. I am very grateful and thankful for the treatment I received under this surgeon.

To be Honest I was going in for my cater-ax on one eye to get fixed , this was due to a unforeseen trauma , once in for basic treatment Mr McGowan noticed the eye nerve at the rear was also damaged, I was wide awake during this Mr McGowan said he could carry on if i wished to repair the eye which I agreed . The second day the difference was unbelievable, now after 3 nearly 4 months the eye which has been repaired is even better than the other one !! Improve ? some times it is nice for people to get credit for what they can do and beyond that.

From my first consultation with Dr McGowan last year I felt extremely confident in his care. He explained everything really well and has a great easy going manner. I had a macular hole and cataract operation in January and then in May had a second cataract removed on the other eye. He put me completely at ease during both procedures. My eye sight has improved so much that I now only need glasses for reading. My optician also remarked on what a very good job he'd done. I really can't recommend him highly enough and am so appreciative of what he's done for me.

I cannot recommend the services of Dr McGowan enough. This guy is so good at his job but his manner with a patient is just exceptional. Eye surgery can be intimidating but Dr McGowan's happy, confident and knowledgeable approach puts you at ease and having undergone 2 surgeries with this chap already, I cannot stress how safe you are in his hands. Top notch, five star surgeon, classy, good banter and very good taste in music. Dr McGowan thank you!

I had a detached retina 45 years ago when I was 19 years old. Unfortunately the operation, though successful, left with me with only partial sight in my right eye. My left eye was very short sighted and over the past few years I developed a very dense cataract in my right eye as well as the beginnings of a cataract in my left eye. My optician referred me for a cataract operation but I was disappointed after having consultations with two doctors. Both advised me that due to my extreme short sight and previous operation they felt a cataract operation would be too risky. I had resigned myself to the fact that my eyesight would slowly deteriorate and I would eventually go blind. Then I received an appointment for a consultation with Dr McGowan at Gartnavel and that, quite literally, has changed my life. He felt confident that he would be able to help and his positive attitude gave me hope. I had both cataracts removed before Christmas and it has been nothing short of a miracle! The care I received was exceptional and my sight has improved so much that I no longer require glasses to drive or to read a book. My optician has told me it is the best result she has seen for someone who was as short-sighted as myself. Dr McGowan is very approachable and has an infectious confidence and I am in awe of his surgical skills. I really can’t thank him enough for improving my life in this way.
